Washington and Seoul have agreed to hold a series of five military exercises on the Korean Peninsula from May 25 to June 15. According to the agencyYonhap“, the maneuvers will involve advanced weapons systems, including F-35A stealth fighters.
The Ministry of Defense of South Korea reported that the exercises will be held at the Seungjin training ground in Pocheon, 52 km from Seoul.
It is noted that the maneuvers are timed to coincide with the 75th anniversary of the formation of the South Korean Armed Forces, as well as the 70th anniversary of the South Korean-American alliance. The last time such a major exercise took place was in 2017. Then more than 2 thousand soldiers took part in them.
In April, South Korean President Yoon Seok-yeol stated that Seoul will use the full power of the alliance with the United States, including nuclear weapons, if North Korea decides to attack. However, The Wall Street Journal wrotethat the White House has no plans to transfer a nuclear arsenal to the Korean Peninsula. However, in May it became known that Washington will send an Ohio-class nuclear submarine into the waters of South Korea.
